What did you want to be when you grew up? A teacher? A doctor? A pilot? No matter what it was, I am quite sure you never said “I want to grow up to be an assessment development professional.” No child in the history of the human race has ever said that. I get it. Why would they? Nobody on the planet talks about assessment development or psychometrics as a career because most people don’t even know that it actually IS a career. Throughout my time as an assessment professional, I have had countless conversations about assessments with people across a wide variety of industries. And for the last 24 years, the main question that has been raised in all of those conversations has been “You can go to school for that?!” Yes, yes you can. In fact, it is a combination of educational requirements, on-the-job training, and best practices for assessment processes that drives quality within our industry.
